چکیده

The flowering plants represent one of the largest terrestrial evolutionary radiations within recent geological times. Current estimates indicate there may be as many as half a million extant species, yet within the angiosperms species richness can vary over several orders of magnitude between closely related clades and between geographical regions. Understanding why some regions and some lineages contain more species than others has been a major challenge in biology. To date, approaches for studying these two patterns have been mostly separate. Using a tree of life for flowering plants, we demonstrate that environment can explain much of the taxonomic imbalance evident within phylogenetic trees not explained by key traits, and unequal rates of diversification, a product of the interaction between traits and environment, may contribute to regional patterns in species richness.

Implications of High Temperature and Elevated CO2 on Flowering Time in Plants

Flowering is a crucial determinant for plant reproductive success and seed-set. Increasing temperature and elevated carbon-dioxide (e[CO2]) are key climate change factors that could affect plant fitness and flowering related events. Addressing the effect of these environmental factors on flowering events such as time of day of anthesis (TOA) and flowering time (duration from germination till fl...

Flowering phenology in subalpine meadows: does climate variation influence community co-flowering patterns?

Climate change is expected to alter patterns of species co-occurrence, in both space and time. Species-specific shifts in reproductive phenology may alter the assemblages of plant species in flower at any given time during the growing season. Temporal overlap in the flowering periods (co-flowering) of animal-pollinated species may influence reproductive success if competitive or facilitative in...

Constrained growth flips the direction of optimal phenological responses among annual plants.

Phenological changes among plants due to climate change are well documented, but often hard to interpret. In order to assess the adaptive value of observed changes, we study how annual plants with and without growth constraints should optimize their flowering time when productivity and season length changes. We consider growth constraints that depend on the plant's vegetative mass: self-shading...

Reproductive limits of a late-flowering high-mountain Mediterranean plant along an elevational climate gradient.

Mountain plants are particularly sensitive to climate warming because snowmelt timing exerts a direct control on their reproduction. Current warming is leading to earlier snowmelt dates and longer snow-free periods. Our hypothesis is that high-mountain Mediterranean plants are not able to take advantage of a lengthened snow-free period because this leads to longer drought that truncates the gro...

Flowering time of butterfly nectar food plants is more sensitive to temperature than the timing of butterfly adult flight.

1. Variation among species in their phenological responses to temperature change suggests that shifts in the relative timing of key life cycle events between interacting species are likely to occur under climate warming. However, it remains difficult to predict the prevalence and magnitude of these shifts given that there have been few comparisons of phenological sensitivities to temperature ac...
